The Tiny Folk Collective - Distance

E Waldken All the sorrow of our collective pandemic trauma is forged into a deep, rich, poignant lament that gives me chills every time. Also the arranging and quality of recording is stunning, giving space to each and every instrument to be heard and shine, while still forming a coherent whole, despite recording at distance !

about

A Lament for Lost Propinquity. This song was written during, and about, the lockdown of 2020. It is an attempt to address and work through the more difficult emotions of that period.

lyrics

I look out on empty streets
The stillness strikes a chord
The sound of wind and trees is
Speaking without words

Must we always keep apart?
Will this distance stay between us?
Our loved ones kept at arm's length
We feel this sorrow keenly

All these things we took
For granted, fall away
All plans on the calender
Crossed out, day after day

The stage where Art once thrived
Lies abandoned, empty and forlorn
No feet upon the dancefloor
The curtain draws no more

When home becomes a cage
The days become a blur
Life's come to a standstill
In an uncertain world

Fear and doubt, they assail me
And it's hard to keep holding on
Hope can't carry this burden
Courage is not this strong

The enticing spring-time blossom
Keeps growing while we stay
Isolated and lonely
Waiting for better days

Our worlds become so small
And we reach for a wider sky
The sun, though shining bright, can't
Break these clouds inside

Now I say to you, my friends
How I long for our next embrace
We will see through this ordeal
And meet in merrier days
